Located in the Shire of East Gippsland 235km south of Canberra, the town of Orbost has a population of 2,500 people. It sits on the banks of the Snowy River and several national parks surround it.

History

Orbost history begins in 1842. That is when Peter Imlay established the Snowy River Station. He sold his land three years later to Norman McLeod. McLeod gave it the name Orbost after Orbost farm on the Scottish Isle of Skye.

In the 1850s, the discovery of gold in the area brought an influx of miners to the town. Other prominent local industries were forestry and agriculture. To protect the native forests of the region, the government decided to extend the national parks.
