History

Nunawading was established in the 1870s. Its first industries were the production of bricks and clay. The town takes its name from an Aboriginal word for ceremonial ground or battlefield. The name originally applied to a much wider area.

Between the 1920s and 1945, the area was called Tunstall. There was a housing boom in the suburb after World War II. It became the administrative centre of the City of Nunawading in 1968. In 1994, the City of Nunawading merged with the City of Box Hill.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The intersection of Springvale Road and Whitehorse Road is at the centre of Nunawading. The area is home to Melbourne’s largest selection of bulk retailers. This area is called the Mega Mile.

Nunawading is also home to Bird Observation & Conservation Australia’s head office.
