Newport is an inner suburb of Melbourne, 7km south-west of the CBD. Based in the City of Hobsons Bay, Newport has a population of over 12,000 people.

History

The traditional owners of the land are the Yalukit-willam people of the Boon-wurrung Country. They have called the Newport area home for around 30,000 years.

In the early 1800s, the first Europeans came, bringing violence with them. In 1835, John Batman established a treaty and there was relative peace for some time.

European settlement began around 1862 at what was then known as Williamstown Junction. The suburb was renamed Newport in 1881.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Newport is home to an ethnically diverse population. It has many places of worship, two Catholic schools, Asian and Italian restaurants, tattoo parlours, and boutique wine bars.

The Newport Folk Festival is held every year. The suburb is also home to many parks including Newport Lakes Park and Paisley Park.
