Established in 1870, Nagambie is a town in Victoria. With a population of over 1,500 people, Nagambie sits on the Goulburn Valley Highway. The name Nagambie is thought to come from the Aboriginal word mean “lagoon” or “still waters”.
History
Farming activity started in Nagambie in the mid-1860s. By 1868, the town was gazetted. In 1870, Nagambie built a school. In 1872, the town built a Catholic church. A couple of years later, two flour mills and a mechanics’ institute appeared. By 1877, the town boasted 76 buildings.
1871 was an exciting year for Nagambie. Upon the creation of the Goulburn Shire, Nagambie became the area’s administrative centre.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
The Nagambie Lakes are a popular attraction in Nagambie, acting as the site for national and state rowing championships. The Nagambie Lakes Regatta Centre has a 2000m, National Standard canoeing and rowing course. It is known as one of the state’s major water sports facilities.
