History

The suburb’s name comes from the Aboriginal word “mirambeena”, which means the land of frogs. Murrumbeena was officially named when the railway station opened in 1889. The local primary school opened in the mid-1910s.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The main street in Murrumbeena is Neerim Road. This street has a strip shopping centre, as well as great little street cafes. Murrumbeena also has an AFL team who compete in the Southern Football League, and a lawn bowls club. One of Melbourne’s most popular shopping centres, the Chadstone Shopping Centre, is just a short drive away.
