Mt Dandenong is both a mountain and a small township. It is located 35 kilometres east of Melbourne’s central business district. It has a population of 1,276.

History

The town of Mt Dandenong was settled in 1893. It was first named Mt Corhanwarrabul. Spelling and pronunciation difficulties resulted in its name being changed to its current one.

A general store and primary school had been set up by 1900. A major plane crash in the area in 1938 killed eighteen people. In 2002 sign a proposal to build a Hollywood-like ‘Melbourne’ sign on the side of the mountain was rejected.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Mt Dandenong regularly experiences snowfall. These happen most frequently between late winter and spring.

The town is a popular spot for tourists. The William Ricketts Sanctuary is located on the east of the mountain. It features 93 ceramic sculptures nestled into the eucalyptus forest.
