Morwell is a town with a population of around 14,000 people. It is located 149km east of Melbourne in the Latrobe Valley area of Gippsland.
History

The Morwell district was originally inhabited by the Gunai indigenous Australians. They called the area ‘more willie’ meaning ‘wooly possum’. Their earliest contact with European settlers occurred in the 1840’s when people from New South Wales journeyed South in search of pasture for their stock.

The early settlement by Morwell River was linked to the area now known as Morwell when a rail line was built between Melbourne and Sale in 1973. A railway station was then built just 3 miles away from the settlement and development around it followed.

Morwell boasts plenty of leisure facilities including a 25-metre indoor pool and the Morwell Golf Course on Fairway Drive. There are also a variety of retail shops, restaurants and cafes. Other attractions include the La Trobe Regional Art Gallery and Morwell National Park.
