Mooroopna is a small town on the banks of the Goulburn River and lies opposite the larger city of Shepparton. Mooroopna is 180km north of Melbourne. It has a population of over 7,800 people.

History

The town’s name means ‘deep water hole’. This name comes from the Kaieltheban tribe who occupied the area before European settlers arrived in the 1840s.
Mooroopna prospered during the 1860s from commerce and trade attracted to the nearby gold fields in Bendigo and Beechworth. By the end of the 1870s, the town flourished and offered many homes and hotels, as well as its first school, bank and hospital.
