Moorabbin is a suburb in Melbourne, 15km southeast of the CBD. In the local government area of the City of Kingston, it has a population of over 5,250 people.

History

The name is thought to come from the Aboriginal word “moorooboon” which means a resting place. In 1957, the Post Office opened with the name South Brighton. In 1886, it was renamed Brighton South and in 1909 it was renamed Moorabbin.

The eastern side of Moorabbin has mostly been an industrial area since the first development in the 1960s. Major industries in this area include Philip Morris International Inc. and Coca-Cola. It’s well-known locally for its residential area that was built after WW2.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The suburb is home to the Moorabbin Campus of the Holmesglen Institute of TAFE.

It also has an Australian Rules football team that competes in the Southern Football team called the Moorabbin Kangaroos. Moorabbin Oval is the football and cricket venue.
