Monbulk is a town in Melbourne’s Metropolitan Region in the local government area of the Shire of Yarra Ranges. 42km east of the CBD, it has a population of over 2,700.

History

Monbulk takes its name from the Aboriginal name “Monbolloc” which means “hiding place in the hills”. Dandenong Forest Village Settlement, a settlement with 76 farms measuring 10-acres, was created in 1893. In 1898, the post office was opened.

Monbulk was famous for being the site of Monbulk Preserves Ltd. It was a jam factory that was founded by the Camm family and is now owned by Cadbury. It made Monbulk Jam from locally grown fruit. The site now belongs to Garden City Plastics.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

It’s home to many farms which grow fruit. It is also known for having a substantial bulb and cut-flower industry.

Monbulk has four schools which include Monbulk Primary, St Paul’s Catholic Primary, Monbulk College, and Mountain District Christian School.
