FAQs

  • How often should a septic tank be emptied?

The council recommends that Septic Tanks & Treatment Plant Systems be emptied every 3 years. Treatment plant systems should also be serviced quarterly.

  • What are signs my tank needs to be emptied?

Septic leaks in the backyard, strong sewage smells, slow draining bathrooms/backflow.

  • Can you pump the septic through the plastic inspection opening?

Short Answer: No. We do not pump septic tanks through inspection ports as it can lead to several serious and expensive complications. While an IO pump out might temporarily lower the tank's levels, it does not adequately empty it.

  • How do I find my septic tank?

You need to find a large concrete lid(s) when looking for your tank. If you cannot locate the septic, we offer a service with a qualified plumber who can attend and locate the septic tank using a drain camera. We can also provide you with a condition report and mapping of your drainage field (if applicable)

  • My septic smells. Does this mean I need an empty?

Septic tanks can smell for several reasons, one is that they need to be emptied. You can try enzymes and other wives’ tales; however, if it has been more than 3 years since your last empty, the first recommendation is to get the septic emptied.

  • Do I need to be home when you pump out my septic?

It is not a requirement for you to be home. We ask that pets be contained to make the service safer and easier for everyone involved.

  • How do I pay for the service?

On your invoice, the payment details are on the bottom left corner. You can either bank transfer the funds or call the office to pay by EFTPOS. Please get in touch with us if these options do not suit you.

  • I am worried that the truck won’t be able to fit. What size are your trucks?

Yarra Valley Septics and our sister company have over 22 trucks, ranging from underground car park clearance trucks to large semi-trucks. We mostly send out our 12,000L rigids for septic works and can get these into most properties. If there is an access issue with access to your property, just let us know on the phone, and we will work with you to get the job done!

  • Do the lids need to be opened on the tank?

Our operators are equipped with specialist equipment to open septic tank lids. Lids can be heavy and easily broken or dropped into septic tanks. It is recommended that you let the professionals handle all septic procedures.

  • What should I expect after desludging of my systems?

Desludging your septic tank is an important step toward maintaining your septic system, however it’s completely normal for the system to take a short period to re-stabilise as beneficial bacteria regenerate and resume effective operation. During this period, you may experience: 😷 Odours – Especially after using toilets, showers, or the laundry 💦 Temporary decline in effluent quality – The system is rebuilding beneficial bacteria 📋 Service reports indicating reduced performance
