Maribyrnong is an inner suburb of Melbourne. It has a population of just over 10,100. It lies on the Maribyrnong River, after which the suburb is named. It lies just to the north-west of Melbourne.

History

A post office opened in the suburb during the 1880s, although it was short-lived. It re-opened in 1912 and thrived until 1975.

The area also housed the Department of Defence munitions factory, a site now earmarked for housing development.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Nowadays there is a choice of schools and other children’s facilities in the suburb. There is only one place of worship for the whole suburb, a Roman Catholic Church.

Maribyrnong has a host of parks which are considered unsuitable for housing development due to flooding risks. The parkland and gardens have been created for residents to enjoy.
