The small town of Maffra is in the local government area of the Shire of Wellington. The town’s main economy is dairy farming and other agriculture-based industries. One of the eight Murray-Goulburn Cooperative processing plants situated throughout Victoria is located in Maffra. The area has a population of just over 5,000 people.
History
The town’s roots are in the cattle industry and it was once an outstation for the very first cattle run in the region. The name of the town is said to have been taken from a group of squatters from Maffra village in the Monaro area.
In 1864 on July 20th the Post Office opened and the earliest record of settlers is sometime during the 1860s. Maffra was the beef capital of West Gippsland and was also the only Sugar Beet centre in the whole country.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
The town is said to have one of the prettiest main streets in Victoria and there are several places of interest worth visiting. These include The Gippsland Vehicle Collection Museum that is situated within one of the old sugar beet buildings.
There is a Mardi Gras in the town every March and an annual agriculture show in October. The area has two primary schools and a public secondary school. Sport is well represented through the local Australian Rules football team. There is also a hockey association located within the Cameron Sports Complex and a golf course on Fulton Road.
