Macleod is a suburb of Melbourne, 14km north-east from the CBD. Its local government areas are the Cities of Banyule and Darebin. It has a population of over 9,500.

History

Macleod was named after Malcolm Macleod, who acquired land in the area in 1903. In 1911, 9 years after the railway passed through the suburb of Macleod, Macleod railway station was opened.

In 1923, Macleod Post Office opened. This was later replaced by the Simpson Barracks office in 1987. Macleod West refers to the residential locality to the west of the railway station. In 1954, Macleod West Post Office opened on Aberdeen Road close to the railway station.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The local Aussie Rules football team is the Macleod Kangaroos. They play in Division 1 of the Northern Football League. Based at De Winton Park in Rosanna, as of 2008 they’ve played in 3 consecutive Grand Finals. There is also a cricket and basketball team.
