Macedon is a town near the Calder Freeway in the Macedon Ranges of central Victoria. It’s in the local government area of the Shire of Macedon Ranges and it has a population of over 1,800.

History

In 1859, the Post Office opened and was known as Black Forest until 1870. In 1983, the Ash Wednesday fires swept through Macedon and destroyed many of the houses in the town.

Macedon is famous for being the town from the 1975 mystery movie “Picnic at Hanging Rockâ€_x009d_ which is based on the Joan Lindsay novel of the same name. Part of the 2009 film “Knowingâ€_x009d_ was also shot around Macedon.

Macedon has been used as a filming location for film and television. It also has a primary school that was once attended by wartime prime minister, John Curtin, and registered teams in cricket, Australian rules football, netball, tennis, and lawn bowls
