Kerang is a rural town in northern Victoria. With a population of over 3,800 people, Kerang can be found on the Loddon River. It is 279km north-west of Melbourne.
History
Kerang is thought to take its name from the Aboriginal word meaning “cockatoo”. The Wemba-Wemba tribe are considered Kerang’s original inhabitants.
In 1836, Thomas Mitchell became the first European to enter the area. In 1845, European settlers started to settle in the area. Over the next decade, many buildings sprang up in Kerang. This included a public house, saddlery, and church.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Lagoons and lakes surround Kerang, and are considered to be the most highly-populated ibis rookeries in the world. In fact, naturalists estimate that 200,000 ibis breed in the area every year. Because of this, Kerang’s symbol is that of a flying ibis.
Kerang is popular with sports fans. The town has a horse racing club called the Kerang Turf Club, as well as the Kerang Golf Club.
