Inverloch is a seaside town located 143km south-east of Melbourne. It is a popular tourist destination with a population of around 5,000 people.

History

The first European settler in the area was a man named Samuel Anderson. In 1883, a post office opened under the name Anderson Inlet. Prior to this, the Bunurong indigenous people lived in the area peacefully for thousands of years.

Today, the estuary where the Tarwin River enters the Bass Strait is still known as Anderson Inlet. The rest of the area was renamed Inverloch in 1889 after the Scottish ‘Lake Inver’ which literally means ‘Lake Entrance’.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Inverloch is best known for being the site of the discovery of Australia’s first dinosaur bone in 1903. Today, the Dinosaur Dreaming excavation site attracts visitors from all over the world with over 6000 bones discovered since 1997.

Inverloch also has a monthly farmers market which showcases locally sourced produce.
