Hurstbridge is a town in Victoria, 26km northeast of Melbourne’s CBD. In the government area of the Shire of Nillumbik, is has a population of over 3,500.

History

In 1842, the area was first settled by Cornelius Haley. It was known as Upper Diamond Creek or Allwood after the homestead built on Haley’s selection.

In 1924, the town was renamed after the Hurst family. The Hurst family took over from Haley and built the first log bridge over the Diamond Creek in 1858.

In 1912, a rail line was extended to the town to transport fruit to Melbourne. Because of this, a settlement began to develop near the bridge. The post office opened that same year.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Hurstbridge is home to a football team that plays in the Northern Football League. It also has a basketball club, the Hurstbridge Hurricanes, that play in the DVBA, and a cricket club that plays in the Diamond Valley Cricket Association.
