History

Hughesdale grew up around the railway line. It was initially a suburb of Oakleigh. The railway attracted commuters, and a station was built in 1925.

The suburb boomed and houses were built on a grid plan. It became a commuter suburb for Melbourne in the 1940s. Streets are named after British railway stations.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The suburb borders Chadstone and is the main access point for the popular Chadstone Shopping Centre.

The high street declined after the centre opened. In recent years, ‘Poath Rd Village’ has revived. Locals and shoppers now visit its boutiques and cafes. The high street includes historic shopfronts from the interwar period.

Local schools include a primary school, Catholic high school and Greek Orthodox school.
