Highett is a suburb of Melbourne. It sits just 16km to the south-east of the city’s central business district. It has a bustling population of 10,263.

History

The suburb takes its name from 1850s landowner William Highett. The railway came to Highett in 1881. A post office finally followed in 1924. Highett was home to a Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation factory from 1939 to 1945. The factory built aircraft parts for the war effort.

Population in Highett boomed in the 1950s. Industries, as well as residents, flocked to the area. In recent years, a lot of renovation has taken place in the suburb.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

There are a number of sporting facilities in Highett. These include Highett Football Club, Highett Cricket Club and an Olympic-size swimming pool. Highett Bulldogs represent the suburb in the Southern Football Netball League.

Local shoppers enjoy a major local shopping centre that opened in 2011.
