Heatherton is a Melbourne suburb located 20km south-east of the city’s central business district. Thanks to its open space nature, it has a relatively small population of around 2,800.

History

It’s been a residential suburb since the 1800s, but Heatherton was mainly used for sand mining for quite some time. Notable early buildings include the post office (closed in 1973) and the Melbourne Benevolent Asylum. In 1970, the latter would become The Kingston Centre for aged care.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Heatherton’s masses of lush, green open space make it an extremely pleasant place to live. It has two excellent golf courses, as well as market gardens and the sprawling Karkarook Park. Heatherton is known for its many large, beautiful houses, which are perfect for young families. It’s a safe, friendly community with good transport links to Melbourne’s other inner suburbs, and it’s only a few kilometres from the beach.
