Glen Iris is a suburb located in Melbourne. It is 10km south-east of Melbourne’s Central Business District with a population of 24,948.
History
Royal Navy Captain Thomas Henderson arrived in Melbourne in 1850. The ship that he came in was called Iris. The estate he bought in Gardiners Creek was called Glen Iris, which was sold in 1852. This homestead established a church in 1865 and in 1871, the land was granted for an adjacent school. This school is now Glen Iris Primary School. By the 1880s this suburb became titled Glen Iris.

Several government and independent schools are located in Glen Iris. They include
Camberwell South Primary School, Glen Iris Primary School, St Cecilia’s Primary School, St Roch’s Catholic Primary School, Sacré Cœur School, Korowa Anglican Girls’ School and Caulfield Grammar School Malvern campus.
Sporting facilities including Harold Holt Swim Centre, a BMX track, Burwood District Bowls Club and several reserves and ovals are available.
Two train stations on the Glen Waverley railway line, Gardiner and Glen Iris, are located in the suburb. Tram routes 5, 6, 72 and 75 run for the residents and Melbourne bus routes also connect along the area.
