The port city of Geelong is located on the Corio Bay 75km south-west of Melbourne. Due to its location, it is known as the Gateway City. In 1827 the area was named after the Wathaurong Aboriginal word meaning “land” or “cliffs” The City has a population of over 187,000 people.
History
By the 1860’s Geelong was one of the largest wool manufacturing centres in the country and it was proclaimed a City in 1910. The City saw huge growth as an industrial centre right up until the 1960’s when the population grew to over 100,000 people.
Geelong was also an important hub for shipping and railway links and even today the area has an above national average population growth. In the last few decades, there has been a shift from heavy manufacturing industries to health, education, and advanced manufacturing methods. Service industries have also played a part in the ongoing economic success of the region.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Geelong is home to the second oldest club in the Australian Football League and is also a vibrant centre of performing arts and entertainment. Many well-known Australian bands have started out in the area including Barry Crocker.
There are several pubs, clubs, and quality dining establishments in the region too. The area is well served by schools and colleges and there are great transport links via the road and rail networks.
