The town of Geelong West is a commercial and residential suburb in Geelong, Victoria. Its population is just over 12,000.

History

The town was formerly known as Kildaire. Its name was changed to Geelong West in 1875.

It had a post office which opened in 1865 and a railway station by the 1880s. The town used to have an electric tram from 1912 to 1956. The service was then replaced by buses.

One of the industries associated with Geelong West was a ropeworks factory. The site went on to be developed into a Woolworths supermarket.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

A number of heritage buildings can still be seen in Geelong West. These include the Harp Inn, Donaghy’s Rope Walk, and the Shearers Arm Hotel.

The town hosts an annual festival to promote and celebrate cultural diversity. It honours and highlights the artwork and fashion designs of Geelong’s citizens.
