Flemington is a suburb in Melbourne, located around 4km from the city’s CBD. It has a population of 7,528, and the suburb is within the local governments of the City of Melbourne and Moonee Valley.

History

Flemington was purchased by James Watson in 1839, and he named the area after Flemington Estate in Scotland, as his wife’s father was a manager there. The suburb slowly developed from the 1840s onward, helped in particular by the Victorian Goldrush of the 1850s, and a European immigration influx in the 1950s. The Melbourne Cup horse race has been held here since 1861.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Flemington is home to Australia’s iconic Melbourne Cup thoroughbred horse race, which is held annually on the first Tuesday of November. During this time, tourists and locals flock to the racecourse in their finest attire, to watch the race that stops the nation. Flemington also has a shopping plaza, and twelve parks, reserves and ovals.
