History

Fitzroy has a long history as a home to Melbourne’s working class. Established in 1839, it was Melbourne’s first suburb. It takes its name from New South Wales Governor Sir Charles Augustus FitzRoy.

Later, it was one of the first places in the city to become a municipality. Many industrial sites and factories neighboured the suburb. This led to massive population growth between the 1860s and 1880s. Since the 1950s, the area has been gentrified.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Today, Fitzroy is home to people from a mix of social backgrounds. It is a hub of art and bohemian culture in the city. Brunswick Street is the centre of the suburb’s nightlife, retail, and dining.

The Melbourne 2030 Metropolitan strategy plans to redevelop the area.
