Originally called Box Forest, the area was named Fawkner in 1867 after the pioneer settler of the same name. Fawkner’s first school opened in 1909 and it is now a Buddhist Temple. Many of the first settlers in the area were dairy farmers until soldiers started settling there at the end of the First World War. The area expanded quickly once the first public housing works were started in 1946 and these ceased in the 1960’s.
