Essendon is a historic suburb of Melbourne in Victoria located 10 kilometres north-west of Melbourne’s central business district. The area is home to some beautiful houses and a population of around 19,000.

History

The suburb was once home to the Wurundjeri clan. In 1803, two men were the first European explorers into the area. Their names were Charles Grimes and James Fleming.

Essendon takes it name from the village of Essendon in Hertfordshire, England. A man called Richard Green named the area after his hometown.

In 1890, an architect called R.A. Lawson built a large mansion in the town. It became the home of Collier McCracken who was part of the local brewing family. The building is now known as Lowther Hall Anglican Grammar School.

Essendon offers great shops, restaurants and cafes, as well as some top schools. It has beautiful parks and great sporting facilities on the doorstep.

There are tram services, train services and bus routes, all of which make travelling around easy. You can find pubs in the area, along with some stunning buildings.
