Welcome to Epping, VIC
Epping is a suburb of Melbourne, located 22km north of the Central Business District.
The original Epping township is on high ground west of the Darebin Creek, with most early buildings having been relocated from lower flood-prone land. The growing village was named Epping in 1853, borrowing its name from the UK (like many Australian towns of the time would) where Epping Forest grew. Many of the earliest buildings of Epping were made from bluestone, which is plentiful in the surrounding area. Some of these structures still stand today.
On Epping Road there is a strip shopping centre and the Epping Plaza shopping centre, which is adjoined by the Epping hospital. The Melbourne Market is located in Epping and is the central wholesale trading and distribution centre for Victoria’s fresh produce industry. Epping is home to several government and private schools, including St Monica’s College, which is one of the biggest Catholic High Schools in Australia, and Mill Park Secondary College, the second largest public school in Victoria. The Northern Metropolitan Institute of TAFE has a campus at Epping, which was developed in 1992. The Epping campus of NMIT is one of the largest providers of training to the agriculture sector in Victoria.
