Located in Victoria, Eltham is 20 kilometres north-east of Melbourne’s central business district. It has a population of over 18,000 and is classed as a ‘green wedge’ area.

Eltham is shown on maps as far back at 1848. In 1851, Crown allotments were being sold and a private subdivision was developed by T. M. Holloway. Back then, the area was known as Little Eltham. Around the same time, the town centre could be found at the intersection of Pitt Street and Main Road.

The town opened its first post office in 1854. After the railway line was built in 1902, Eltham began drawing in lots of new business. There is a historic trestle bridge in the town that was built in 1902, which is the only one in Melbourne to still be in use. Eltham has also been home to well-some known artists and writers including Neil Douglas, Walter Withers, Mervyn Skipper and Alan Marshall.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The thing that Eltham is most famous for is its Montsalvat artist community. You can find medieval-style buildings in the suburb that were built in the 1930s.

In addition to its unique community, Eltham has a mix of state and private schools, sports clubs and a local train station.
