Eaglehawk is a town in Victoria. The town sits north-west of Bendigo on the Loddon Valley Highway. It has a population of 5,618.

History

The area was the home of the Neangar people. The first European settlers arrived in the mid-19th century. Joseph Crook discovered gold in the area in 1851. A gold rush followed, leading to the building of the new town in 1852.

In 1892, alluvial gold was exhausted. 300 tonnes of gold were subsequently extracted from new reef mines. Gold mining fell off prior to the 1890s, leading to a drop in population. The Victorian Government amalgamated the Borough of Eaglehawk with four other councils in 1994.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Eaglehawk has a rich literary history. The novel The Sphinx of Eaglehawk by Thomas Alexander Browne was published in 1985. “Banjo” Paterson also mentioned the town in his 1896 poem “Mulga Bill’s Bicycle”.

Each March, the town hosts a Dahlia and Arts Festival.
