Dandenong is 30km south-east from Melbourne’s CBD and sits at the foothill of the Dandenong Ranges. With a population of over 25,000, Dandenong’s name comes from the Woiwurrung word “Tanjenong” meaning “lofty mountains”.

History

Dandenong began as a township in 1852. This was the time when brick making, quarrying, tanning, charcoal burning and the milling of the red gum timber became an important industry.

By the late 1850s, it was an important staging post for travellers heading into Gippsland. The area became known as the ‘gateway to Gippsland’ due to the road from Melbourne.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

In the middle of the 20th century, Dandenong became a major manufacturing and commercial area. It is currently in the process of major urban renewal as part of the Melbourne 2030 strategy.

As a major activity centre due to its central location, Dandenong is home to the Dandenong Plaza shopping centre.
