Cranbourne is a suburb in the local government area of the City of Casey. It is located 43km south-east of Melbourne and is home to around 19,000 people.

History

The area now known as Cranbourne was originally inhabited by the Boonwurrung aboriginal people. The first European settlers, the Ruffy Brothers, arrived in 1836 and opened the Cranbourne Inn soon after.

The first post office in Cranbourne was opened in 1857 and the area began to grow as more settlers arrived throughout the 1860s. Development was helped by the draining of the Koo Wee Rup swampland which created new land suitable for farming.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Cranbourne has two large shopping precincts and a busy high street retail as well as a number of leisure facilities. These include a racecourse, golf courses and a swimming pool.

Cranbourne is also home to the Royal Botanic Gardens which specialises in Australian native plants and the stunning Red Sand Garden.
