Collingwood is a bustling suburb of Melbourne. It’s one of the city’s main inner areas, located just 3km from the central business district.

History

After early European settlement, Collingwood grew quickly enough to be declared a city in 1976. The Victorian Gold Rush was instrumental in its initial prosperity and subsequent industrial boom. In 1994, Collingwood became part of the City of Yarra. Collingwood’s recent history has been a constant struggle to preserve its unique identity. Many battles have been fought by residents to save the suburb’s old buildings, such as the successful 2010 campaign to keep the Tote Hotel alive.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Collingwood is famous for its large number of Heritage-listed buildings. It’s also a hub of interesting boutique shops, as well as larger mainstream outlets. The Tote, the Gem and the Grace Darling are popular live music joints, and Collingwood has long been a haven for LGBT venues and events.
