Coldstream is a locality and township in Greater Melbourne, 36km north-east of Melbourne’s CBD. The local government area is the Shire of Yarra Ranges It has a population of over 2000.

History

The township developed around the railway station which arrived in 1888. The post office later opened in 1889. Before the arrival of the railway station, Coldstream was known as “The Lodge”.

Dame Nellie Melba bought Coombe Cottage at Coldstream in 1909. The house sits at the junction of Maroondah Highway and Melba Highway which was named after her. It later became the home of Melba’s granddaughter, Lady Pamela Vestey, until her death.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Coldstream has a community centre, many farms, a landfill, and a primary school. Coldstream is also home to the Coldstream Timber and Hardware company and the Coldstream Brewery. It also has Coldstream Airport, a small airfield with a flying school and an aero club.
