Burwood East is a suburb in Melbourne. It lies 17km east of the city’s central business district. According to the 2011 census, it has a population of 10,141.

History

The Wurundjeri Aboriginal clan are the first owners of Burwood East. They are one of four clans of the Port Phillip area. Stringybark and Manna Gum forest covered the area prior to European settlement.

Horticulturists cultivated the area from the mid-nineteenth century. They grew Daffodils, apples, cherries and pears. Walter Mock developed the Red Williams’ pear variety in the area in the 1930s.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Sport is very popular in Burwood East. The suburb is home to a basketball centre, velodrome, cricket club and football club. The football club competes in the Eastern Football League.

The Tally Ho Business Park in Burwood East is home to a number of corporations. These include the Country Fire Authority and the regional headquarters for VicRoads. “
