History

The suburb takes its name from the Bolin Bolin Billabong. The Billabong, in turn, takes its name from an Aboriginal word for Billabong. The area was home to the Manna Gum people before European settlers arrived.

Frederic Unwin purchased 5,120 acres in the area in 1841. His purchase included all of modern Bulleen. The Crown purchased the land from Unwin at a rate of one pound an acre under the short-lived Special Survey regulations.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Bulleen Plaza is Bulleen’s primary shopping centre. It is home to the local library, business centre, post office and medical centre.

The suburb also boasts a range of parks and reserves. These include Ted Ajani Reserve and Koonung Park. Bulleen is also home to Heide Museum of Modern Art.
