The small town of Bruthen is home to 624 people. It is a vibrant community and host to many events throughout the year.

History

People of the Gunai tribe populated the area now known as Bruthen before settlement. Explorer Angus McMillan visited the area in 1840. By 1862, the town had a post office.

Bruthen made the history books when Ralph Oborn safely ejected from his aeroplane there. He was the first pilot in Australia to safely eject from an aircraft after engine failure.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Cyclists flood the town each year at the beginning of the Great Victorian Bike Ride. The town is a stop on the East Gippsland Rail Trail. This path is popular with cyclists, hikers and horse-riders.

The town also host a Blues and Arts festival each February. It has an active Geocaching community.

Services include a general store, specialty stores and cafes. The Bullant Brewery attracts craft beer enthusiasts.
