Brunswick East is an inner city suburb of Melbourne. Located 6 kilometres north of the central business district, it has a population of 8,476.

History

Robert Hoddle first surveyed the area of Brunswick in 1839. The marked blocks were bought mainly by land speculators. Bluestone quarrying was a major industry until 1852.

The suburb was subdivided in the 1880s. The post office opened on 13 January 1888. Prestige Hosiery, Brunswick’s first textile factory, opened in 1922.

Brunswick East boasts a large number of restaurants and cafes. Cuisines include Greek, Italian, Lebanese and Vietnamese. The East Brunswick Hotel is a popular music venue.

There are a number of parks in Brunswick East. These include Allard Park, Jones Park, Methven Park and Fisher Reserve. The Merri Merri Creek corridor in Brunswick East has a popular cycling path connected to the main Yarra Trail.
