Blackburn South is a Melbourne suburb in the City of Whitehorse local government area. It’s located 16km east of the city’s central business district. Blackburn South has a population of more than 10,500.

History

Largely undeveloped until the 1950s, Blackburn South was mainly used for orchards. With the construction of several housing estates, it became a working-class neighbourhood in the 1960s and ‘70s. During this time, the suburb became the birthplace of the Blackburn South Sharps, Melbourne’s most famous Sharpie gang. The 1980s saw a shift towards more middle-class leanings, and Blackburn South remains a peaceful residential suburb.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Blackburn South is known for its beautiful parks, including Eley Park, Orchard Grove Reserve and Shawlands Avenue Reserve. Canterbury Road is the suburb’s main commercial hub, with a Woolworths, McDonald’s, and various other smaller shops and restaurants. Several of the area’s old orchard farms still stand as well.
