History

Bendigo was an agricultural area where sheep were grazed until gold was discovered in the 1850s. After the gold was found, people came to Bendigo from all around the world, and the area grew. The city was named after Bendigo Creek.

Bendigo has lots of fine examples of Victorian architecture. There is also a Victorian-style park that contains a viaduct. Nature lovers will enjoy the Bendigo Botanical Gardens that house many animals including lizards, foxes and possums. The legacy of the gold rush has made Bendigo very popular with tourists.
