Benalla is a small city located on the Broken River in the northeast of Victoria. It is 212 kilometres northeast of Melbourne and has a population of 9,328.

History

The Taungurung people are the traditional owners of Benalla. Hamilton Hume and William Hovell were the first Europeans to sight the area in 1824. They named it ‘swampy’. Major Thomas Mitchell explored the area further in 1834.

Reverend Joseph Docker settled in 1838. The post office was opened six years later. The area was surveyed in 1848 and proclaimed a town in 1861.

Benalla supports many industries including tourism, ammunition and aviation. It has many large retailers including Coles, Woolworths and Mitre 10.

Benalla’s cultural facilities include a performing arts and convention centre. This is home to a theatre and cinema. The Rose Festival is an annual garden festival which was established in 1967.
