Belmont is a residential suburb of Geelong, located just 4km from the Geelong central business district, but is separated from its neighbour by the Barwon River. It has a population of around 13,600 people.

History

The name ‘Belmont’ means ‘Beautiful Hill’ on account of its location on the banks of the Barwon River. This area has been inhabited by the indigenous Wathaurong people for over 25,000 years.

The first European settler in the area was Dr Alexander Thompson. Initial development was hindered by the lack of a suitable bridge over the Barwon River. A wooden bridge was built around 1848 with a secure iron bridge following in 1859 which led to an influx of new settlers. A township was finally established by the late 1850s.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The largest shopping strip in the Geelong area is located on High Street but Belmont is more widely known for its parks, reserves and recreational facilities. These include the Belmont Common and the recently redeveloped Leisurelink Swimming Complex.
