The suburb of Belgrave is located 25 kilometres east of Melbourne’s central business district. It falls within the Shire of Yarra Ranges. It has a population of 4094.

History

Europeans settled Belgrave in 1851. It was originally known as Monbulk. It was renamed to Belgrave in 1903 after a nineteenth century chapel in Leeds, England. A post office opened in the suburb in 1904. Many of the suburb’s men fought in the two world wars.

Belgrave has many popular tourist attractions nearby. These include the Puffing Billy Railway, the 1000 Steps and the Sherbrooke Rainforest. The Cameo Cinema complex has eight cinemas, including an outdoor cinema. Sooki Lounge, Gin Lane and Bell Tavern are popular live music venues.

Cricket and Australian Rules football are popular sports in Belgrave. There is also an outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts and a playground.
