Barkly is a small town in north-western Victoria. It is in the local government area of the Pyrenees Shire, on the western border with St Arnaud Range National Park. You can reach it from Melbourne by travelling 180km north –west. Barkly lies where the road to St Arnaud from Frenchmans meets the road to Redbank from Landsborough.
History
When gold was discovered in the area in the middle of the nineteenth century the town became Navarre Diggings. A Scotsman name James Law led many of the dogs, when there were between 700 and 6000 people digging for gold. The town was renamed in 1861 after Sir Henry Barkly, who was the Governor of Victoria.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Barkly has a number of green areas for you to enjoy the wonders of the outdoors. The nearby Kara Kara National Park has historic woodland. Barkly has a public farm that is open all year round for people to pick strawberries and lavender. The first gold discovery in the area is marked on the headstone for James Law.
