Bannockburn is a rural township near Geelong, Victoria. It is 93km south-west of Melbourne. It has a population of more than 2,400.

History

The township was founded in the early 1850s as ‘Leigh Road’. It was renamed ‘Bannockburn’ in 1892. It is presumed ‘Bannockburn’ refers to the 14th century Scottish battle site.

The town grew as a coaching stop during the 1850s and 1860s. The main route to the Ballarat goldfields at the time was via the Geelong port. The town’s first post office opened in 1863.

The Geelong-Ballarat railway line reached the town in 1863.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Bannockburn contains notable examples of Victorian colonial architecture. This includes the former Somerset Hotel, built in 1854. It still stands and is now a private home. The Bannockburn railway station is another example. It is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register.

The centre of the town is a commercial area populated by small businesses.

The Bannockburn Lagoon is used for fishing, and picnic activities. It is not recommended for swimming.

Sports played in the area are netball, golf, basketball and lawn bowls. There is also a bike trail.
