Balwyn is a quiet suburb of Victoria with a population of over 12,000. It is situated 10 kilometres east of Melbourne’s central business district and close to all amenities.

History

In the 1850s, a man called Andrew Murray bought the land overlooking Canterbury Gardens. He built a house and named it Balwyn. It means “the home of the vine.” Balwyn was named after Andrew Murray’s house, which was once located on the site of Fintona Girl’s School.

Balwyn Post Office opened in 1874 and closed in 1894. It reopened in 1920.

The suburb of Balwyn is home to some lovely cafes and restaurants including Mr Hendricks and Michel’s Patisserie. There is also the Palace Cinema, which has a trendy bar and cafe.

Balwyn also has the Whitehorse Road shopping strip. From parks and schools to quiet streets and a friendly community, Balwyn is a great neighbourhood all round.
