Balwyn North is a part of the local government area of the City of Boroondara, located 10km east of Melbourne. It has a population of over 20,000 people and is sometimes known as North Balwyn.

History

Henry Elgar purchased a large area of land in 1841 for one pound an acre, an amount far below the actual market value. It became known as ‘Elgar’s Special Survey’ and had a lasting effect on the geography of the area, with several roads and subdivisions forced to change course.

The south-east of the suburb is called Greythorn. This area was developed after Balwyn North but was first settled in by the Maughan and Towt families in the 1830s.

Balwyn North is well known for its quiet residential streets and leafy green gardens which have made the area very popular with families and commuters.

The suburb is serviced by a main shopping strip known as ‘The Village’, with other shopping centres and strip malls located around town.
