History

Gold was first discovered at Poverty Point in Ballarat in 1851. News quickly spread, and lots of people came to live in the area. The Ballarat fields continued to produce gold yields for many years.

Ballarat became a city in 1871. It is now known for its rich history and Victorian era heritage.
