Bairnsdale is a residential city in East Gippsland, Victoria. It’s located 281km east of Melbourne’s central business district and has a population of 14,271. It is a major regional centre in eastern Victoria, along with Traralgon and Sale.

History

The origin of the town’s name is largely unknown. Some believe the name comes from Bairns-dale, after a farmer noticed the amount of children running through the valleys. The name means “valley of the children”.

It was named as a shire in 1868, before being gazetted as a city in 1990.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The town sits along the Mitchell River and includes Macleod Morass and Jones Bay Wildlife Reserves.

The town has a beautiful Roman Catholic Church, called St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church. It’s known for its tall tower. Bairnsdale’s centre gardens lie in the centre of the business district and has war memorials inside.
